Sofia Boutella is an Algerian-French actress and dancer. Born on April 3, 1982, in Bab El Oued, Algiers, Algeria, she has gained recognition for her talent in both dancing and acting. She began classical dance education at age five, began rhythmic gymnastics at age ten and joined the French national team at age 18. She later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother is an architect and her father, Safy Boutella, is a jazz musician. In 1992, the family moved from Algeria to France.



Her surname means "the men of the mountains". Was in a relationship with Robert Sheehan (March 2014-October 2018). Currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Has a tattoo of an inverted cross on her arm, which was made by Jared Leto. Cousin of Shirine Boutella.



Sofia Boutella started her career as a dancer at a young age. She initially gained prominence as a hip-hop and street dancer in France. She became a member of the dance troupe "Chienne de Vie" and later joined the renowned French dance company called "Vagabond Crew." Her skills as a dancer caught the attention of Madonna, and Sofia subsequently toured with the pop icon as a dancer.


Sofia Boutella transitioned to acting and made her film debut in the dance film "Le Défi" (The Challenge) in 2002. She continued to make a name for herself in the entertainment industry, but her breakthrough came with the role of Gazelle in the 2014 film "Kingsman: The Secret Service," directed by Matthew Vaughn.


Sofia Boutella gained further recognition for her performance in the critically acclaimed film "Star Trek Beyond" (2016), where she played the role of Jaylah. Sofia also portrayed the title role in the 2017 reboot of "The Mummy," alongside Tom Cruise.
